Who is it for?

Trying to conceive
Magnesium is involved in hundreds of enzymatic reactions throughout the body and is one of the most commonly under-consumed minerals in modern diets. It contributes to normal energy-yielding metabolism, normal psychological function and has a role in the process of cell division. Maintaining adequate magnesium intake is an important part of supporting overall health for both women and men when preparing for pregnancy.

Magnesium contributes to normal muscle function, electrolyte balance and normal energy-yielding metabolism. Suitable for use throughout pregnancy and breastfeeding as part of a balanced diet and healthy lifestyle.

"Magnesium is one of those nutrients that many people are quietly deficient in without knowing it. The symptoms, poor sleep, low mood, muscle tension, irregular cycles, are easy to attribute to other things. It was only when I started taking it consistently that I noticed the difference."
  • 300mg elemental magnesium per daily dose 80% of what you require in a day, not a token amount.
  • Bisglycinate chelate form Absorbed more efficiently and far gentler on the stomach than the forms used in cheaper supplements.
  • One of the few supplements I take just before bed Magnesium bisglycinate has a naturally calming effect via glycine, and taking it in the evening is something I genuinely look forward to.
  • Works alongside your full protocol No overlap with Fundamental Woman, Omega-3, CoQ10 or myo-inositol. Everything fits.

Magnesium bisglycinate: what are the benefits?

Fundamental Magnesium contains one active ingredient, magnesium bisglycinate chelate, chosen for its superior absorption and relevance across fertility, sleep, stress, pregnancy and breastfeeding. Explore each section below.

Benefits for fertility and conception
Ingredient Dose Key benefit

Hormonal balance and ovulation

Magnesium plays a direct role in the hormonal signalling pathways relevant to ovulation and follicular development. It is a cofactor for the enzymes involved in steroid hormone production, including oestrogen and progesterone: both central to a healthy menstrual cycle and reproductive function. Magnesium deficiency is associated with elevated cortisol, which in turn suppresses reproductive hormones. In men, magnesium is associated with normal testosterone levels and sperm motility.

Benefits for sleep and stress
Ingredient Dose Key benefit
Magnesium (as bisglycinate chelate) Chelated form
300mg
80% NRV
Calm, sleep and stress resilience

Magnesium contributes to normal psychological function and a reduction in tiredness and fatigue. Bisglycinate is particularly well suited to evening use: glycine, the amino acid to which magnesium is chelated, has independently documented calming effects and is associated with improved sleep quality. For anyone going through a fertility journey, the quality of sleep and the ability to regulate stress are not peripheral concerns.

Blood pressure, energy and muscle function

Magnesium contributes to normal blood pressure and normal muscle function, both crucial as pregnancy progresses. It supports the energy metabolism needed to sustain a rapidly growing baby, and magnesium requirements increase during pregnancy in a way that diet alone rarely covers in the UK.

Replenishing mineral stores after birth

Pregnancy and birth place significant demands on your mineral reserves, and magnesium is no exception. Continuing to supplement through breastfeeding supports bone health, magnesium works alongside calcium and vitamin D to maintain normal bone density, and helps counter the fatigue and depletion that are common in the months after birth. Requirements remain elevated throughout lactation.

Belinda and Chris
"I wish I had known what to take earlier in our journey. It might have saved us years, money, and a lot of heartbreak."

My husband and I did 6 rounds of IVF. After three failed cycles, we switched to a US clinic that actively encouraged us to take a specific list of supplements, including high-dose CoQ10, for three months before starting. That round, our embryo attrition rate dropped dramatically. We made five good-quality blastocysts. It was the turning point.

I'm a doctor. I'd read the research. But I still hadn't prioritised supplements the way I should have. After seeing the difference firsthand, I couldn't understand why no one had made this simpler. The evidence was there. It just wasn't being applied.

Finding everything in the right dose, the right form, without fillers and industrial oils, was a full-time job on top of everything else we were already going through. I used to spend Sunday evenings making up pill organisers for us both. That's where Fertility Hero and Fundamental Woman came from. I made the products I spent years looking for.

FAQ

Why bisglycinate rather than citrate or oxide?

Magnesium oxide is the most commonly used form in cheap supplements — it has poor bioavailability (around 4%) and is more likely to cause loose stools. Magnesium citrate is better absorbed but has a laxative effect at higher doses, which is why it's often used for constipation rather than daily supplementation. Magnesium bisglycinate is chelated — bound to two glycine molecules — which significantly improves absorption and makes it the most gut-friendly form at the doses needed for meaningful daily supplementation. The glycine also contributes independently to the calming and sleep-supportive effects.

When should I take it?

You can take it whenever you like. Some people prefer to take it in the evening. The glycine in bisglycinate has naturally calming properties that make it well suited to evening use. Taking it with food further supports absorption and helps avoid any chance of stomach discomfort, though bisglycinate is generally very well tolerated.

Can I take it alongside Fundamental Woman or Man?

Yes! The two products are designed to work together.

Is it safe in pregnancy?

Yes, at this dose. Magnesium bisglycinate is considered safe throughout pregnancy and breastfeeding. If you are under consultant care or taking any medication, check with your healthcare provider as you would with any supplement.

Why is magnesium a standalone product rather than included in Fundamental Woman?

Magnesium is a bulky mineral: to include a meaningful 300mg elemental dose in a multivitamin would significantly increase the capsule count or reduce the dose to a token level. A standalone product allows you to get a meaningful amount and have flexibility as to when and how you take it.

What does "bisglycinate chelate buffered" mean?

Magnesium bisglycinate chelate buffered is the industry-standard form of magnesium bisglycinate used in professional supplement manufacturing. A small amount of magnesium oxide is used as a carrier during production to improve the flow of the powder — this is standard practice and does not affect the elemental magnesium dose or the absorption benefits of the bisglycinate form.

Is it suitable for vegans?

Yes. HPMC capsule shell, no animal-derived ingredients.
